9 AUGUST 2025
Its the big 6 week school holidays in England, so we decided we would treat Oscar and take him to his first ever airshow, the choice was the Blackpool Airshow or the Southport Airshow in a few weeks time, so I have been to both, and getting in and out of Southport is an absolute nightmare with all the roads being single track and very slow moving. So Blackpool was the easy choice in this regard, especially with all the other family attractions and activities on offer for kids too.
THE AIRSHOW VILLAGE ON THE PROMENADE
So we left home at 8.00AM and by 10.30AM we were parked up just outside of Blackpool and in an Uber making our way to the Tower promenade.

Everywhere in Blackpool is absolutely rammed, I haven’t seen this many people here for a long time, the airshow itself was OK, unfortunitly, there was 30 miles per hour winds, so a lot of planes and the Red Devils, were forced to cancel.  The Red Devils are the Army's world-class parachute display team and I was looking forward to watching these perform.

When we first arrived, we all needed to use the toilets, so made our way to the North Pier Lounge Bar, the airshow wasn’t starting until 2.00PM, so we had plenty of time for a quick drink before we went looking around the airshow village.

Oscar likes any excuse to sit down and play games on a phone or tablet, so he was happy anyway.

Once we finished our drinks, we visited the RAF Red Arrows stand and got Oscar an Official baseball cap together with a genuine kids flight suit, he was absolutely buzzing.

The wait time to sit in the RAF Hawk Jet used by the Red Arrows was around 1.5 hours, so he entertained himself playing with a few other kids his age while we stood in the line, The wait was well worth it though, just to see the happiness on his face.

THE RED ARROWS EXPERIENCE
Oscar had the time of his life, dressing up as a Red Arrow pilot and actually sitting in the cockpit of one of the actual RAF planes.

SHOW TIME
Its 2.00PM now, time for the Red Arrows to open the show and make there grand entrance, we hear the roar and travelling at around 300 mph, they fly directly over Blackpool Tower and straight out to sea, we are directly in front of the tower and the noise was incredible.

By now Oscar is on my shoulders with his ear defenders on, watching in awe, kicking and swinging his arms in the air, I think he liked it.

Now trying to take photographs with a kid on your shoulders is very challenging to say the least, actually its really, really hard work, but today wasn’t about photography, it was about Oscar enjoying a good day out, although given the pocket camera I was using, I think the images have turned out pretty good.

RAF RED ARROWS DISPLAY TEAM
The Red Arrows opened the show, the balletic dance of the planes in the sky, as they twisted and turned through their routine, smoke streaming behind, and as per usual, were spectacular.

I have watched these perform many times over the years, remember fondly sitting on top of my dads shoulders and watching them, got to be over fifty years ago now, it was nice to do what my dad did, and have Oscar up top.

The Red Arrows nine aircraft display are the crowd favourites of all British air shows, regarded by many to be the world’s most spectacular and exciting flying team, and they have entertained millions of spectators year after year, and wowed the crowds once again with a spectacular display.

THE END OF THE SPECTACULAR ROUTINE

CENTRAL PIER AMUSEMENTS
After the Red Arrows display had finished, we made our way over to central pier, We wanted  Oscar to use some energy up and have some fun on the various fun fair rides, and also in the Amusements, flashing lights and video games, what kid doesn’t like that.

Unfortunately for Oscar, he’s at a funny age where he isn’t tall enough to go on the rides he really wanted to go onto, like the dodgems, and the rides he could go on were not really exciting enough for him, with that said, he was pulling some funny faces and looked a little bit green at one point when he was on the MINI Miami ride, but luckily he pulled himself together.

HOME TIME
We were reasonably lucky all day with the weather, it was a little overcast most of the day with a bit of sun and blue sky at times, at about 4.00PM, just has we were leaving Central Pier, its started to rain, we were looking for a family friendly pub, as we both fancied a pint, but we were walking down south and all the usual pubs had bouncers on the doors, so we didn’t bother.

We decided to call it day, so we made our way into the back streets and ordered another Uber to get back to where we had parked the car.  Oscar fell to sleep almost immediately once we started on our way back home, he went straight to bed and slept through till 7.00AM. Result.

Brilliant Family Day Out.
